# How to fill in bank details to send money to Japan?

When filling in the account number and bank branch code for a Japan bank transfer, please note that:
* Your account is a savings/general account (Futsuu).
* Your account number is usually **5-8 digits**, shown on your savings book/passbook.
    * If your passbook shows a set of numbers (most likely 5 digits, used for local transfers in Japan) before your account number, you **don't need to include it** when sending with Topremit.
* Your bank branch code is **3 digits**, also shown on your savings book/passbook.

### Sending Money to Yucho (or Yuutyo) - Japan Post Office?
Japan Post Office accounts use a different format from other Japanese banks: a **5-digit 記号 (symbol)** and **8-digit 番号 (number)**, instead of a standard 3-digit bank branch code and 7-digit account number. Because of this, you'll need to convert these details before entering them on Topremit.

###### Where to find your 記号 (symbol) ・ 番号 (number)
* Passbook/bankbook: Your book may already show a **converted branch code and account number.** If so, you can use them directly, no conversion needed.
* Card: Your card might only show the 記号 (symbol) ・ 番号 (number) format, which **must be converted** before use.

###### How to convert 記号 (symbol) ・ 番号 (number) to the standard bank branch code and account number format
You can use **Japan Post's official conversion tool** by following these steps:
* Visit the [**Japan Post Bank Account Conversion Tool**](https://www.jp-bank.japanpost.jp/kojin/sokin/furikomi/kouza/kj_sk_fm_kz_1.html)
* Enter your 5-digit 記号 (symbol) and 8-digit 番号 (number).

* Confirm the 5-digit 記号 (symbol) and 8-digit 番号 (number) you entered. Make sure they're correct so the conversion result is valid.

* Conversion complete! You can enter the resulting bank branch code and account number on Topremit.

If you'd like to **convert manually**, follow the guide below:
* **If your 記号 (symbol) starts with 1:**
    * Bank branch code (3 digits): take the 2nd and 3rd digits of your 記号 (symbol), then add "8".
    * Account number (7 digits): remove the last digit ("1") of your 番号 (number). If the result is fewer than 7 digits, add "0"s in front until it's 7 digits.

* **If your 記号 (symbol) starts with 0:**
    * Bank branch code (3 digits): take the 2nd and 3rd digits of your 記号 (symbol), then add "9".
    * Account number (7 digits): use all digits of your 番号 (number) as-is. If the result is fewer than 7 digits, add "0"s in front until it's 7 digits.
